"Take advantage of your resources"
I was extended an offer at Emerson Collective to be their Sports Investments intern. It included moving to Washington D.C. and partnering with Monumental Sports and the professional franchises in the area to combine social justice initiatives and athletes. With a global pandemic came the concept of sports coming to a screeching halt meaning my position would not have much to work with. Or so one would think. During this internship, one learned outcome was to take advantage of what was presented to me. I took the opportunity to analyze the sports world response to not only the global pandemic, but the social unrest being witnessed across the nation. I was able to utilize this analysis to further implement different projects and initiatives that further connected sports to these issues. While most might have thought this position would not remain productive during these months, my team and I were able to work diligently to create more opportunities than a normal summer to ignite social change using sports. In addition, as an intern cohort, we were exposed to fabulous guest speakers (on zoom) from all walks of life. From politicians to CEO's, from historians to authors of best sellers, the biographies of each speaker simply got more impressive with each passing day. In terms of taking advantage of this resource, almost every speaker offered up the opportunity to speak in a 1:1 manner over zoom if any individual wished too. I spoke to almost every speaker we had, related to my field or not, just to simply learn and continue to make connections for my future. And while it is too soon to tell if there will be a pay off in these terms, the things I learned from speaking in 1:1's is simply pay off enough.
A look into the lessons learned from my intern experience at Emerson Collective.
